Why a House Sitting for Months Isn’t Always a Concern

Buying Homes Laurie Donofrio January 31, 2026

Quick question. Would you automatically skip a house that’s been on the market for months? A few years ago, that made sense. If a home didn’t sell right away, something was probably wrong. But today? That’s not always true. Homes are taking longer to sell across the board.

Why? It’s because buyers have more choices, so they can take their time.  On average, it’s taking about seventy-three days nationally. And that's actually pretty normal for this time of year. So, a house sitting for a couple months isn’t necessarily a concern.  Maybe it was just priced a little high. It didn't have good listing photos. Or it’s in an area where there’s a lot of inventory available.

Here’s the upside a lot of buyers miss. Those sellers are often more open to negotiation. So, before you write off a listing just because it’s been sitting, it might be worth a second look. Sometimes the best opportunity is the one everyone else passed right over.
