October 29, 2026
This week is the last stretch of the long Falls Lake evening. Through Saturday, Oct. 31, Falls Lake State Recreation Area keeps its fall day-use hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1, according to NIST. The same day, the state's Falls Lake schedule drops day-use hours to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for all of November and December.
The lake is still out there after work. What changes is how you get to it. For the next two months, the dark hours near Hasentree are mostly taken up by programs you register for, set on specific Wednesdays, plus a free holiday walk in town that runs nightly from Dec. 5 through New Year's Eve. On a November weeknight, the way onto a Forest Ridge trail at 6:30 p.m. is a registration.
Two numbers matter here, and they barely line up.
| Date | Raleigh sunset | Falls Lake day-use closing |
|---|---|---|
| Late October, through Oct. 31 | Before the clocks change | 8 p.m. |
| Nov. 5, 2026 | 5:15 p.m. | 6 p.m. |
| Dec. 15, 2026 | 5:02 p.m. | 6 p.m. |
The sunset times come from timeanddate's Raleigh tables for November and December 2026. By mid-December, the gap between sunset and the gate closing is just under an hour. Someone who leaves a Raleigh office at 5 p.m. gets to the water about when the light is gone and the clock is already running down.
Forest Ridge Park works the same way. It's the City of Raleigh's 587-acre park on Falls Lake at 2100 Old NC 98 Hwy in Wake Forest. The Hasentree Club's own address is 7305 Village Club Drive, also in Wake Forest. The city's park page lists daily hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and warns that the gates close promptly. On a weekday, the trails are effectively a lunch-hour and weekend option until spring.
Raleigh Parks published its answer on Oct. 19. The "Forest Ridge Park After Dark" series opens with the line "Why let daylight limit your play time?" and keeps the park open past dusk for a few registered sessions on select Wednesdays.
| Program | Dates | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glow Disc Golf | Nov. 18 and Dec. 9 | 6 to 8 p.m. | $5 |
| Night Hike | Nov. 18 and Dec. 9 | 6 to 8 p.m. | $6 |
| Night of Lights: Glow Golf | Dec. 16 | 5:45 to 9 p.m. | $10 |
| Seize the Night Trail Run | Dec. 16 | 6 to 8 p.m. | $2 |
The series is for ages 14 and older, and the trail run is limited to ages 16 and up. Registration goes through the city's RecLink system. Most of these sessions start right at 6 p.m., the posted closing time. In practice, they're the only way to be on Forest Ridge's trails after the gates normally shut.
The park gives these programs plenty of room. It has 6.5 miles of natural-surface hiking trail, 3.25 miles of single-track mountain bike trail, 1.85 miles of unpaved multi-use trail and a half-mile paved loop. The glow rounds use the park's 18-hole disc golf course, which the city lists as seasonal and currently open. Raleigh notes that single-track trails can close after rain. The city also says its mountain bike trail status page stops posting updates starting Nov. 1. On a wet week in November, checking ahead takes more effort.
Families with younger kids can use the afternoon programs on Forest Ridge's fall youth calendar. "Digging into the Past" is on Nov. 15 and "Animals at Night" is on Dec. 13, both from 3 to 4:30 p.m. "Animals at Night" ends half an hour before the mid-December sunset, which shows how short the winter afternoon gets.
Daylight brings some good news too. Holly Point, the state recreation area's campground at 14424 New Light Road in Wake Forest, has been closed for a wastewater system upgrade. The park's construction notice, last updated Sept. 15, says Holly Point will reopen by Nov. 16, 2026. It says the project replaces aging infrastructure so the park can keep processing and treating wastewater safely.
The reopening is partial, and short for most loops. Loops 2 and 4 open Nov. 16 and close Dec. 1. Loop 3 opens Nov. 16 with no closing date posted. Loops 1 and 5 stay closed for construction. The park also says more closures may come as the project continues. Dec. 1 is a busy date elsewhere on the lake as well. B.W. Wells Campground ends its fall season that day, and Rolling View's Campground Loops B and C close for the year. At Holly Point, Loops 2 and 4 get only the two weeks after Nov. 16, while Loop 3 has no posted end date.
For hiking, the closest long stretches are on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail along the lake. The MST's Falls Lake guide describes a 2.3-mile hike from the Barton Creek boat ramp off Six Forks Road to NC 98, and a 3-mile route from NC 98 to the Shinleaf Recreation Area. Shinleaf is also on New Light Road, at 13708, and its hike-in and group campgrounds stay open year-round. The guide warns that high lake levels can flood low-lying sections and points hikers to its trail updates before they head out. With sunset after 5 p.m., a 3-mile out-and-back on a weekday afternoon has to start well before 3.
If you'd planned on Wake County's Blue Jay Point County Park at 3200 Pleasant Union Church Road, expect fencing. The grounds are open 8 a.m. to sunset, but areas next to the playground and restroom building are still fenced for construction, and the Park Center is closed. The county's $7.3 million improvement project is paid for by the 2018 parks bond and was scheduled to finish by fall 2026. It covers pond renovation, ADA trail upgrades, more parking and Park Center work.
Forest Ridge's after-dark sessions fall on three Wednesdays. Wake Forest covers most of the rest of December. The town's free Evening Holiday Walk at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road, runs nightly from Saturday, Dec. 5, through Thursday, Dec. 31, from 6 to 9 p.m. Lights cover the crepe myrtles and shrubs in the Walker Garden and Performance Garden, and a Christmas tree nearly 20 feet tall stands on the Performance Garden Stage.
That's 27 nights of a lit, walkable park that opens just as the Falls Lake gates close. It's the closest thing this season has to the after-dinner lakeside walk of late summer, and it needs no registration.
Downtown has its own events stacked around the same week. The Lighting of Wake Forest is Friday, Dec. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Centennial Plaza, and the tree lighting usually happens around 6:15 p.m. The Downtown Holiday Open House runs Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the Holiday Artisans Market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Centennial Plaza and the Town Hall visitor lot. Before that, the Wake Forest Cares Holiday Kick-Off is Saturday, Nov. 21, from noon to 4 p.m. East Owen Avenue and South White Street between Elm and Jones avenues close at 9 a.m. and reopen by 6 p.m.
Falls Lake's day-use hours go back to 8 p.m. in March.
